The word comes from the Latin ubus meaning “wool”, describing the material from which it was made. In the 18th century upholstery referred to all types of textile covering for interior surfaces such as walls and ceilings which were then covered in cloths embroidered at low cost by hand needlework; now more commonly referred to as wall-papering or wall-covering. From about 1750 onwards upholstery design became an art form.
