It would seem we’ve got a little bit of a Dr Who addiction here at C Inside Media. Following on from our recent posts about Dr Who’s Tardis and the inside of a Dalek getting captured by Street View we’ve just captured something very rare with our Google Street View cameras….a giant 35 foot animated Dalek in the middle of a field trying to camouflage itself as a pile of straw!
There’s no need to panic though, it’s actually this year’s straw sculpture at Snugburys Ice Cream in Nantwich, Cheshire. Every year Snugburys, along with the help of Harbrook Engineering, create a giant straw sculpture in one of their fields alongside the A51 Chester Road.
This year, to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Dr Who, they decided a giant 35 foot Dalek made from straw would be perfect. Not content with just building a fantastic, attention grabbing, 35 foot straw Dalek they took it one step further and fitted it with motors and speakers to bring it to life. Walking past a motion sensor triggers things off and the head of the Dalek turns left and right and the arms of the Dalek also move whilst large speakers blurt “Exterminate! Exterminate!” at passers by.
The Dalek has already received lots of national press and the team at C Inside Media went along to capture the Dalek with our Street View cameras so that people across the World could take a walk around the sculpture before it gets exterminated and the straw used as bedding for the farm animals later in the year.
Any Dr Who fans in the area should definitely drop in and take a walk around the Dalek and then pop into their on-site Ice Cream shop and try their special “Da Lick” ice cream!
